NV Folktale Brut

Monterey County

Folktale sparkling wine begins in the vineyard, early. Grapes for sparkling wine have to be picked at a lower sugar level than for our still wines, so we tend to harvest 3 weeks before we begin picking fruit for our still wines. For our first sparkling wine, we envisioned a wine that was bright, fun to drink, and food friendly.

We put the blend together in a stainless steel tank and add bubbles through the crémant method. This allows us to control the level of effervescence and achieve the desired texture of the wine. We targeted a softer, less aggressive style that was more like the texture of a prosseco or frizzante wine – perfect for a sunny day in Carmel Valley.

Light and refreshing, we made our Brut to enjoy on its own or paired with- well, just about anything. This sparkling wine opens with notes of green apple, banana, and tropical kiwi, developing into flavors of peach and tart strawberry on the palate. Enjoy chilled and often.

2017 Le Mistral Grenache Blanc

Monterey County

We’re excited to present our first vintage of Grenache Blanc from our vineyards in Arroyo Seco, and boy do we love it. This beautifully fragrant wine presents luscious notes of roses, Bartlet pear, and orange blossom. Though the aromas are quite sweet, the palate is dry and crisp with layers of honeydew melon, rich Arroyo Seco minerality, and a hint of English cucumber. As our Wine Educators say, “I just want to take a bath in this.”

Harvested on 10/4 from Mission Ranch Vineyard in Arroyo Seco. This was the first crop from this vineyard after being replanted, same as our Pet-Nat. The grapes were lightly pressed and the juice was sent to tank to be chilled at 50F for 48 hours. Afterwards, it was clean racked to new tank for fermentation using BA11 yeast. The fermentation was cold and slow to preserve aromatics, lasting 40 days. Once dry, the wine was racked to a clean tank until bottling on 1/11/18. 246 cases produced.

2016 Folktale Coast View Chardonnay

Monterey County

Coast View sits high in the Gabilan Mountains, near Pinnacles National Park. The elevation and marine influences such as fog and wind allow these grapes to ripen slowly and fully, developing complex characters. The 2016 vintage features bright notes of tropical fruit, light toast, and green apple. The “butter” is there, indicating the wine’s aging in French Oak barrels- but it is subtle and elegant. With a lovely apricot finish, this is a wine to enjoy on its own, or paired with your favorite seafood or dessert.

2016 Folktale Reserve Chardonnay

Monterey County

–  90 Points, Wine Enthusiast 2018

Blended from two key AVAs, this Chardonnay embodies what we believe is the best of Central Coast. The striking Coast View Vineyard sits at 2400’ elevation in the Gabilan Mountains in Monterey County, with a gorgeous view of the Monterey Bay. Vines here stay cool throughout the summer, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly to fully develop their fruit forward flavor and clean, natural acidity. We also harvested grapes from the Escolle Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, famous for the rich minerality of the terroir there. Together, they create a true taste of the region’s best Chardonnay.

The Folktale Reserve Chardonnay opens delicately with elegant notes of apricot, banana, kiwi, green apple, vanilla, and toast. It’s fruit forward, yet balanced beautifully with the SLH minerality and a bright, zippy acidity. We made only four barrels of this marvelous wine – enjoy.

The Coast View Vineyard fruit was hand harvested 9/2/16 at dawn. The Escolle Vineyard was hand harvested at 3am on 9/15/16. Once at Folktale, both Chardonnays were lightly pressed and sent to tank to settle for 48 hours before being transferred to barrel to ferment. The wine was racked to tank 6/30, blended, then chilled to 28F. Once cold stable, the Chardonnay was filtered and bottled 7/31/17.

2014 Talking Animals “LOLO” Pinot Noir

Mission Ranch Vineyard

This wine is a new adventure for us – it’s the first time we’re attempting to pair wine with music! For this new endeavor, we’ve partnered with singer-songwriter extraordinaire LOLO, who played a sold out Live in the Vines in 2017 here at the winery. The concert was recorded, and that music is now available exclusively through Talking Animals.  The purchase of one bundle includes one song with each bottle.

We reached into our library and found a limited number of bottles of reserve, single vineyard Pinot Noir that we had stashed away for a special occasion.  We thought this is just the moment we’ve been waiting for. Striking, deep, rich, and vibrant- these words describe both this Pinot Noir and Lolo’s music. Notes of luscious black cherry, raspberry, and rich, chocolatey goodness are balanced by bright acidity and beautiful notes of minerality, making this wine a stand out.  The bottle age alllowed the wine to integrate and mature to showcase the quality of the Mission Ranch Vineyard, where these grapes were grown.  While LOLO’s voice is perfection on it’s own, we hope you’ll enjoy pairing her music with this special wine.

2016 Folktale 777 Clone Pinot Noir

Santa Lucia Highlands

This wine is made from the same clone of Pinot Noir (777, aka “Triple Seven”) from two ranches in the Santa Lucia Highlands. Blended together, this wine exhibits the true qualities of a Triple Seven Pinot Noir. Notes of currant, dark plum, blackberry, and warm vanilla open the bouquet, followed by warm leather and the rich minerality typical of the SLH growing region. On the palate, rich, juicy flavors of blackberry and licorice create a round mouthfeel, full bodied and balanced.

Grapes were hand harvested from two different ranches growing the same beautiful 777 clone Pinot Noir. The first, Tondre Vineyard was harvested 9/6 at sunup on a clear morning. The sun cast a beautiful orange glow over the Santa Lucia Highlands due to the recent outbreak of the Soberanes Fire in Big Sur. The second, Escolle Vineyard was harvested 9/8/16 at 2am on another clear morning in the Santa Lucia Highlands. In both cases, the fruit was delivered to Folktale, sorted by hand, then sent to tank to cold soak at 55F for 5 days. The fermentations went off without a hitch, and finished within 8 days. Pressing took place 9/19, separating the free run juice from the press fraction. The wine was sent to barrel 9/20 and 9/21 where it sat until late August, just a week before bottling. The wine was bottled up on 8/1/17.

2016 Folktale 2A Clone Pinot Noir

Santa Lucia Highlands

This Pinot Noir is an experiment in hyper-localism. We used only one clone of Pinot Noir (the 2A), from one vineyard, and more specifically from just eight rows of vines in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The terroir exhibited in this glass demonstrates the unique micro climates that exist throughout a growing region. This Pinot opens with juicy notes of blackberry, cassis, rose petals, and strawberry-rhubarb pie. While the bouquet is delicate and nuanced, the palate is bold and complex with strong notes of black pepper, licorice, and spice. Elegant, complex, and spicy, this wine should be decanted before enjoying.

2017 Le Mistral Grenache

Monterey County

Our new vintage of Grenache is one for Cab lovers. This rich, full bodied wine opens with notes of blackberry, ripe plum, and minerality. A textured palate reveals spicy notes of black pepper, black tea, and tobacco. We’ve been loving this paired with lamb dishes and summer BBQ.

chilled to 55F for 48 hours before being fermented with RP15 yeast. The fermentation lasted 16 days before being lightly pressed and removing the solids. From there, the wine went into 18% new French Oak barrels where it aged for 10 months and bottled on 8/1/17. 294 cases produced.

2017 Le Mistral Joseph's Blend

Monterey County

– 94 Points, World Wine Competition 2018

The name, Le Mistral, comes from the name for the winds of the Rhône Valley in France, where blustery afternoons cool vineyards quickly and produce similar flavors in their native varietals like Syrah and Grenache. We are proud to farm the Le Mistral Vineyard in a sustainable way. This combines the best management practices from other farming systems, like organic and biodynamic, to positively impact the bottom line, environment, and society.

This vintage of Joseph’s Blend is juicy, spicy, and well-structured thanks to a subtle addition of Petite Sirah. Fruit forward with luscious notes of cherry and raspberry, the bouquet opens to reveal black pepper, cured meat, and Herb de Provence with rich and creamy vanilla and toasty crème brûlée to round out the spiciness. This is a perfect summertime smokehouse wine to compliment your favorite braised ribs, balsamic veggies, and Carolina BBQ.
