A Funny Thing Happened – A Night of World Class Storytelling

Folktale Storyteller Series Presents a night of world class storytellers!! The show features six true short stories, told live without notes. Funny, poignant, intimate (easy now, not like that), and engaging! These storytellers include bestselling authors, Emmy-Award winning writers, TED speakers, stars of The Moth Radio hour, Snap Judgment, and accomplished comedic voices. Storyteller hopefuls, you’ll have the opportunity to join the all star cast on stage to share YOUR story! Volunteer names will be drawn from a hat and one lucky person will get to tell their funny story.

Chef Todd Fisher and his culinary team will be there cooking delicious cuisine available for purchase. Wine, beer & soda will be available at one of our bars and during the show for table service.

(Snap Judgment, HBO, The Tonight Show) Don Reed has received wide acclaim for his 2016 Snap Judgment Performance of the Year -“I Miss Toni”and can currently be seen as a lead in the new Amazon Prime series “Bartlett,” co-produced and recurring role starring Lin Manuel Miranda of Broadway mega-smash Hamilton. He is also featured in the Netflix comedy “Unleashed.” All of this work was born of Don’s status in the theater. Snap’s Glynn Washington has deemed him a “master storyteller,” and many have referred to him as “… a solo powerhouse.”
Don is a Theatre Bay Area Outstanding Solo Production WINNER as well as a triple nominee. Additionally he has also been a nominee for renowned awards such as AUDELCO ‘Viv” Award, San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle, and NAACP Best Actor & Best Playwright. Don has created a trilogy of critically acclaimed solo shows (East 14th, The Kipling Hotel, Can You Dig It? As well as Semi-Famous and DMV) and performed stand up for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno studio audience warm-up for over 1,000 episodes.
TEDx speaker and 3 time Moth Winner (2 Grandslams). Brandon Spars lived and traveled in Indonesia and the Pacific Islands for six years before earning a Master of Arts in Southeast Asian Studies and a PhD in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of California Berkeley. Brandon recently released his first collection of tales entitled Live to Tell. This collection includes the scripts of six award-winning performances at The Moth in Berkeley and San Francisco as well as at West Side Stories in Petaluma. Brandon lives with his wife and two children in Santa Rosa, California.
Samantha Gilweit is a single mother, comedian, musician, and failed pig farmer currently living in Richmond, CA. One day, she asked herself, “What makes less money than pig farming?” and began a career in stand up comedy. Since that humble beginning, Samantha has performed butt naked for a sold out crowd in New York City, was on the pilot episode of “Swerved,” a prank show for professional wrestlers on the WWE network, and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal for being one of the first comedians to perform in virtual reality. Currently, Samantha performs regularly at Cobbs, the Punch Line, SF SketchFest, and is a producer of the hit San Francisco show “Cheaper Than Therapy.” She still performs with two different musical acts and her EP “Single. Mother. F*cker” can be found on Bandcamp and Pandora Radio.
Scott Sanders is an ex-actor ex-New Yorker who moved to the left coast 20 years ago and is still wrestling with cross cultural challenges. Scott has told stories in multiple Moth Grandslams, Moth Mainstage events, NPR’s Snap Judgement, and storytelling venues throughout the Bay Area, NYC, and LA. He is the producer of the multimedia storytelling show called BASH – Bay Area Storytelling Hijacked – at Berkeley’s Shotgun Players Theater.
From Dublin, Ireland, Dave is the winner of the prestigious 43rd annual San Francisco Comedy Competition, is a multiple Moth story-slam winner, bestselling writer, and TED speaker. He has been featured on NPR, DRY BAR, The Huffington Post, Forbes, Inc., TV3, and the Irish Times. Always a witty storyteller, he now calls California home when immigration officials permit.
As far as mid-life crisis go, Phil Griffiths’ wife stacks his career in stand up comedy as better than a drug addiction but worse than him having a mistress. With his dry deadpan humor, Phil shares his slightly off observations on life. Phil has opened for Chad Daniels, Laurie Kilmartin, Josh Blue, Jermaine Fowler, Brad Williams and more. Phil has been part Comedy Central Clusterfest Showcase, Sketchfest and was a top 10 finalist in the San Francisco International Comedy Competition.
